A lot of what we are still hearing is what we’ve been saying for years but we haven’t found an institutional method of making these things happen.- Making and Critical Thinking

- Student-Centered Learning
- UnStandardization
- Passion Projects

Tools Review - Still promoting kind of the same stuff...
As tools become popular, they become for-pay. I struggle with promoting products that have a free entry point, but that becomes prohibitively expensive to use for more than a week or two. I saw a product demonstrated that is to make 5 tutorial videos, and then it’s 7.50 per month, per teacher, and only includes student access and Google Classroom integration at the paid level.- Padlet: virtual discussion board, brainstorming board, etc.
- Screencastify
- Popplet
Social Media
The scary stuff that constantly gets renamed and prevents adults from participating:
House Party - up to 8 participants in a video chat
Has a feature called “Stranger Danger”
When a friend of your friend joins the party, or one of your friends who doesn’t know everyone in the room joins, that’s a time for Stranger Danger. Or, party time!
Musical.ly - started as a lip-syncing video app; not so innocent anymore
Live.ly - live broadcast of whatever you’re doing; never private; open to the world
YouNow - users can tip content providers; users want to get money; will respond to requests
After School - students only; other users confirm new users who have to identify which school they go to; adults “faking” will be booted by student users
Yubo - identifies itself as the “Tinder for Teens”
Monkey - video hangout based on a tree of commonality - meet strangers!
Omegle - intended purpose is for you to meet strangers
Ghost/Vault apps - apps that appear to be something else but hide other content
Burner apps - provide a burner phone number to ring on your device; when cancelled, disappears
One of the most exciting developments comes from MIVU and has to do with personal learning goals. MyPD is a program for teachers to develop their own plan for professional development. A teacher can earn 10 SCECH hours by learning what that teacher thinks is important for his or her own professional development. There is a $30 fee, but the PD is the teacher’s own making, and in those situations where a teacher might be missing a few hours from their District Provided Professional Development, this is a very affordable way to make up those hours. Also mention EduPaths, which is free.
A weekly podcast hosted by Danelle Brostrom and Larry Burden and a cast of thousands spreading the good word regarding Traverse City Area Public Schools, Public Education and Education Technology.
